On Monday, the South Carolina school district and Royall Elementary School apologized for the Facebook post showing two of their workers wearing the uniforms of U.S Border Patrol agents during a school function.

In this now removed post, these workers were shown dressed in gray shirts with words “U.S Border Patrol” written on them while they posed before a reddish wall. Held at the school’s “Royall Cantina”, this event was aimed at celebrating Latin American culture through festive clothing worn by the staff.

This post attracted online backlash after it appeared on July 31; thus on August 1, Royall Elementary made an additional post which recognized an error looking back confirming insensitivity. They indicated that this portrayal ignored difficulties encountered by members of the Hispanic community and reiterated its pledge towards diversity and student success.

Dr Richard O’Malley, Superintendent of Florence One Schools stated some employees involved have left or been sent home as he informed parents via letter. He stated such actions were intolerable reactions adding assurance that every child will enjoy quality learning within an environment characterized by justice irrespective of their background.
