I love motherhood, but JD Vance’s remarks on ‘childless cat ladies’ are deeply misguided.

I always wanted to be a mom and a lawyer. Even though I never attended law school, I became the proud mother of four lovely children. Instead of practising law, I have found even better avenues for my career. At 25, I had my first baby and 31 for my last one. I am glad I started having children early and did not stop at one or two.

Most times when I meet women; I tell them to embrace motherhood but do not want the name of a ‘childless cat lady.’ However, I do not like the unfair language directed at women who do not want to have their own children. Senator JD Vance’s insults about ‘childless cats’ are disturbing and incorrect. Women without kids still have many values to offer, while anyone arguing differently is small-minded or sexist.

Motherhood might be an important role but not the only way one can achieve satisfaction in life. The current generation of women is doing very well socially and economically than ever before but fertility rate has never been this low in the history of America.

There may be those who missed out on motherhood because they wanted to establish themselves first career-wise but ended up waiting too long until their chances were gone. For me, if you are thinking about being a mother do not wait for too long. It is better to have children early enough when you can still easily get pregnant biologically as delaying brings big disappointment later in life. It’s hard to manage both career and kids but it’s doable when you set your priorities right.

For instance, the bulk of household chores and child-rearing is usually done by women even if they happen to be the main breadwinners. It is high time men took initiative and shared family duties. While being a parent brings great joy and sense of purpose in life, it is not the only way to lead a satisfied life. Consequently, women ought not to feel forced into motherhood whereas those who opt for it deserve encouragement and congratulation. In the end, no one ought to pass any judgment on woman’s road in life.
