The Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina took a narrow miss for a perfect 10 at the Paris Olympics on Monday but made history together with his surfboard before it was captured in a breath-taking photograph.

During the round of 16 competition held at Teahupo’o, Tahiti, Medina seemed to be levitating above the ocean celebrating. Medina who performed well received a score of 9.90 from the judges for his best wave of the day which he thought deserved a perfect 10. He said “I thought it really was 10’’ after winning his heat and moved on to the quarterfinals as three times world champion. “The wave was too good.”

However, Jerome Brouillet captured an excellent photo from Agence France-Presse showing Medina suspended in air during one of those rides that happen before anyone else completes their turn out of sight.” On Teahupo’s powerful waves, Jerome Brouillet of Agence France-Presse took this perfect shot.

From a nearby boat where he stood taking shots for the better part of two hours he says: “He [Medina] is at the back of the wave, then he pops up, and I took four pictures. One of them was this one.” On Tuesday, men’s and women’s competitions were postponed by officials due to weather conditions.
