Afghan Olympian Kimia Yousofi Encourages Girls Under Taliban Rule: ‘Don’t Give Up’

In her third trip to the Olympics, Afghan sprinter Kimia Yousofi was not in search of gold medals but as an icon for distressed ladies and girls from her country. On Friday, the 28-year-old finished last in the 100-meter preliminary rounds and boldly held up a placard that read, “Education, Sport, our rights” colored in black green and red which are colors of the Afghan flag.

After she raced at northern outskirt of Paris about Yousofi told them reporters saying, “I have to pass a message on Afghan girls; do not be afraid to fall short or let others choose for you. Find your opportunity and seize it.”

A while ago, Yousofi elaborated on why exiting Kabul was necessary for her when Taliban resumed control in August 2021. She wished she could remain but it was communicated to her that she might face risks since she was a woman who appeared in public.

Being born in Iran where there were two brothers and one sister, Yousofi alongside her parents fled away from their home country towards Afghanistan during 1996 and embraced being an afghani forever. “The very first time I opened my eyes I was already living as a refugee!” shouted out Yousufi. But then again, “I am always going to voice out what my country women need” would be another thing he said.” When it comes to our daughters who are still inside Afghanistan territory its barely any chance they would even get some rights education” including sports too”
